He's pale, male and stale, like me, and he's just declared the oft neglected truth of diversity (and its henchthem, equity and inclusion).
John has just returned from a work event, a dinner with @50 men of a certain age, and, guess what, it was dull. This used to be the norm, not the dullness, I've enjoyed some excellent stag dinners, but most businesses have moved on. I went to a lunch this week, 8 people, 4 women, 4 men. Naturally, we are all so much more than just our gender but, blunt instrument or not, it's a good start. The conversation was varied, sparky, challenging and fun. We can still have fun I think?
And then, my favourite cycling podcast drafted in Lizzie Deignan, one of the greatest ever cyclists. And it morphed from very entertaining to unmissable. Why? The conversation is varied, sparky, challenging, and fun. They are audibly enjoying it more, and so are we.
And what's this, I've joined an advanced motorcycling club, stuffed full of middle aged men in leather and hi viz vests? Well no. Not at all. There are old men, young men, in-between men. And women. Young women, older women, in-between women. I've not spent a lot of time with them as a group, but the signs are promising. I'm expecting vibrant conversation, sparkle and fun.
